ARRA's live version of When It's Love by VH!

Updated: Jan 19

Van Halen underwent a significant transformation in its musical style and sound when Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth as the lead vocalist in 1985. David Lee Roth was known for his flamboyant and energetic stage presence, contributing to the band's early success with a hard rock and party-oriented sound. However, when Sammy Hagar joined the band, the musical dynamics shifted towards a more polished and melodic direction.

Hagar's tenure with Van Halen, marked by albums like "5150," "OU812," and "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge," introduced a more mainstream and accessible sound. His powerful vocals and songwriting style brought a balance of commercial appeal and musical depth. The band explored a broader range of musical influences, incorporating elements of pop-rock (like Eddie on keyboards) and ballads while maintaining the signature guitar work of Eddie Van Halen.

When It's Love is a great example of a song that captures his new sound. Check out our live recording and tribute to this uptempo ballad taken from Austin's Impact Fuel Room on NYE.
